Memorizing money amounts

How did you do with remembering the Canadian coins?  Here are the answers to yesterday's money chart.  Please keep this close in case you forget the coins because we need to know the amounts in order to count money next week!  When writing out money, you can use $ or ¢.  The trick to writing in $ is that everything after the "." is the cents.  For example, $0.25 means 0 dollars and 25 cents.  I have also included a picture of the Canadian bills. *If you forget the amounts of the coins and bills, just remember that their amounts are written on them.

To help you memorize the coins and their names, here's another song for you today!  After, you can practice how well you remember these coins again with the following activities!  You can also ask your parents to borrow each of these coins and have them test you!! :)

For this activity, all you need is to print this out (or copy it on a piece of paper), a dice, and the coins.  You take turns rolling the dice and cover the coin that it says (e.g., if you roll one, you cover the nickle.)  The game ends when you cover all the coins!

All about Coins!

We will move onto our new math unit, which is on MONEY!  We will start today by learning reviewing all the Canadian coins.  Let's see if you remember all their names and how much they are worth.  Here is a fun song to help you remember!

Now fill in the following chart:

3D Shape Wrap-up

Before we move onto our new math unit, let's review the answers from last week's questions.  First, I asked you to sort the 3D shapes into groups and tell me how you sorted them.  There were many creative ways to sort the shapes.  Some of us sorted by the number of faces, some of us grouped the shapes with a vertex together.  Here are some ways to sort them:

Next, I had two 3D math problems for you to solve.  Did you come up with these shapes?

Finally, I asked if you can come up with your own challenge questions.  Here's one that your friend came up with....can you figure out what the answer is?

What story does this picture tell?

Today, we will be doing some more creative writing!  I really enjoyed reading your stories from last time about the bear, owl, and fox.  Instead of giving you the characters, problem, and solution this time, I am just going to give you a picture.  Here is the Learning Goal and Success Criteria for creative writing to help guide you.

Learning Goal:  I am writing a story that is from my imagination.

Success Criteria:
- I have a title for my story
- I have included in my story the setting, characters, problem, and solution.
- I have a beginning sentence like "Once upon a time.." or "There once was..."
- I included details to make my story interesting.
- I check my work to make sure it makes sense and that I have included capitals and periods

- I have pictures to help my readers see the story.

Look at this picture and brainstorm what you think the story can be.  You can use the Story Map sheet to help you plan.  After you plan, you can write your story using the Story Outline sheet OR just write it on a piece of lined paper.

Our Earth Day Posters

I loved all your posters for Earth Day!  There are many ways that you can help save the environment.  Mother Nature needs our help and we must do our part to protect this planet in which we call home.  Here are some of your posters!

Retell of Stellaluna

Did you like the story of Stellaluna?  Poor Stellaluna lost her mother and was adopted by a family of birds.  She learned how to live like a bird.  Luckily, she found the other bats and her mother at the end and started living like a bat once again.  Here is a completed Story Map and an example of a retell.

3D shapes math problems

Today is the last day that we are covering 3D shapes since we learned about them before the March Break already.  To end off this unit, I have two 3D shapes math problems for you to solve. You can solve them on a piece of paper.  Here they are:

1) I have 2 3D shapes in my bag.  Together, they have 7 faces and a vertex/point.  What shapes do I have?  How do you know? *Please draw out the shapes for me and explain HOW YOU KNOW those are the shapes.

2) I have some 3D shapes in my basket.  Altogether, they have 8 faces.  What shapes do I have?  How do you know?  *Please draw out the shapes for me and explain HOW YOU KNOW those are the shapes.

Answers to Shape Riddles

Great job on solving the shape riddles!  Here are the answers to the riddles that I gave you last week.

Here are some that one of your friends came up with, see if you know the answers to these.

Today, you are going to put the 3D shapes into groups and tell me how you sorted them.  Did you group them by the number of faces?  Did you group them by the number of edges?  Maybe you grouped them based on the 2D shapes they have.  It is up to you how you group them...just tell me HOW you grouped them.

Here are the 3D shapes.  There are 2 new ones, pentagular prism and hemisphere.  Group them into different groups and explain how you grouped them.

Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!  We only have one Earth and we need to take good care of it.  Remember The Lorax and The Great Kapok Tree?  Those stories are a perfect reminder for us to respect nature and our planet.  Here are the stories again if you want to listen to them one more time.

What are some ways we can help our Earth? Take a blank piece of paper and some markers and make a poster about that for children everywhere!  We have made posters before for Media Literacy.  Here is the Success Criteria for posters again:

Learning Goal:  We are making a poster for children that show ways we can save our planet.

Success Criteria:
- I have a catchy sentence/words (for example: "Recycle!  Reduce!  Reuse!" or "Walk to school.")
- I have a colourful picture that catches the audience's eye.
- My words are big enough to read.

When you are finished, you can CLICK HERE for some cool Earth day crafts you can make from recycled materials!

Stellaluna

Today we will be practicing our retells again.  We will listen to a story about a bat today called Stellaluna.  Have you read this story before?  After listening to the story, you can retell it out loud before writing it down.  Remember to write in the PAST TENSE because the story has happened already.  You can also use words such as first, next, then, and finally to help you write your retell.

Retell of Peter Rabbit

Thank you for finishing your retells last week!  I hope you liked the story of Peter Rabbit.  He was a very curious rabbit who did not listen to his mother's warning about going into Mr. McGregor's garden.  He got into Mr. McGregor's garden to eat his vegetables and almost got caught.  After being lost in the garden, he barely escaped and lost his shoes and jacket while he was running away.

Here is a completed Story Map from one of your classmates and an example of a retell.  Remember when retelling stories, you need to include details about what happened in the beginning, middle, and end.  Also, please remember your capitals, periods, and to write in the PAST TENSE because the story has happened already.  We will be retelling another story tomorrow!

Shape Riddles

We've done a lot of writing in the past 2 days, I cannot wait to read your retells and stories!

Let's review 3D shapes today.  The last time we worked with shapes, we had to figure out how many faces, edges, and vertices each shape had and whether or not the shapes rolled, stacked, or slid.  Below are the answers to those questions...compare them to yours to see if you got it!  If not, then try again!

Now that you know the properties of those 3D shapes, here are some fun math riddles for today!   See if you can guess all the shapes!  HINT: the riddles are a mix of 2D and 3D shapes.

CHALLENGE: Create your own shape riddles for me!
