Mother's Day

This Sunday, May 10, is a very special day because it's Mother's Day!  I just wanted to take the time now to wish all mothers and mother figures (e.g., grandmothers, aunts, older sisters) a very happy Mother's Day!  I hope that you take the time to relax and recharge, because you deserve it!  Here is a story about Mother's Day, it's called ''How to Raise a Mom" by Jean Reagan.

To celebrate Mother's Day, today you will be doing a very special interview with...you guessed it, your mom!  You can also choose to interview your grandma, aunt, or older sisters as well if you want!  I have included a template of what you can ask your mom.  You can also create your own on a piece of paper!

After, CLICK HERE for a link with some crafts that you can make your mom!  The best present of all though, is for you to listen to her and help her in any way you can (e.g., cleaning your room, washing the dishes, cooking dinner).  Let your mom have a break that day and have a wonderful weekend together! :)

Counting Quarters, Loonies, and Toonies

Did you remember how to count by 5s and 10s?  We will practice counting by quarters, loonies, and toonies today.  Counting loonies is the easiest because it is just counting by 1s!  Toonies is counting by 2s and quarters is the hardest, which is counting by 25s.  Just like yesterday, if you need the actual coins, you can ask your parents to borrow them, or make your own!  Make sure you are familiar with the value of each coin because next time, we will be counting a mix of coins!

Counting Nickels and Dimes

I hope you liked the story yesterday and that you were able to make some good connections!  Today, we will practice counting some coins!  We will start by counting each type of coin separately before mixing the coins up.  Let's start with counting nickels and dimes today.  Since nickels are worth 5¢, you are counting by 5s.  Dimes are worth 10¢, so you are counting by 10s.  Do you remember how to count by 5s and 10s?  This is why I said we need to know how to skip count because it comes in handy in the future...like now! :)

If you need to use actual nickels and dimes to help you count, please ask your parents if they have coins that you can borrow.  If not, you can always cut out circles and label them!

PRACTICE GAME:
After you finish counting today, you can play this game with someone in your family.  You need: dimes, nickels, and a dice.  Take turns rolling the dice and for the number you roll, you can pick that amount in either nickels OR in dimes.  For example, if you roll a 3, you can pick either 3 nickels OR 3 dimes.  The first person to reach 100¢ is the winner.  You can play again, but change it so that the first person to reach 100¢ loses as well!  Have fun!

Making Connections

Other than knowing how to retell the stories that we read, we have talked about how good readers make connections to the stories that they read.  Remember what the different kinds of connections were?  Here is a picture to help you remember!

Today, we will practice making connections to the story "The Relatives Came" by Cynthia Rylant.  How many of you remember a time when your relatives came to visit?  I miss those times right now...but hopefully we will get to see many of our family members soon!  In the meantime, we can think about all the happy memories that we had with our relatives.  After listening to this story, please make some connections.  You can fill out the graphic organizer below.

Some Creative Stories

Last week, you were asked to come up with a story for the following picture:

Many of you came up with really fun stories!  I hope that the planning sheet helped you think of the layout of your story.  When writing your story, you do not need to say "This is the probelm..." and "This is the solution...".  It is ok to just write it out as a story.  Remember also to include more detail in your story to make it an interesting read.  One sentence for the beginning, ,middle, and end doesn't make for a very interesting story.  For example, instead of saying "Amy made a mess.", you can write "Amy accidentally tripped over some presents and fell onto snack table.  The table toppled and down fell all the snacks!  The floor was a big mess!".

Below are some stories that were Level 3/4.  They all had a title, beginning, middle, and end, and had detail.  They also remembered their capitals and periods.  I hope you enjoy them!
