Grade 2 Memories

Tomorrow is the last day of school!  What were some of your memories of this year?  It was definitely not a regular school year, but there were some good times!  Remember the story I read at the beginning of the year called 'First Day Jitters'?  Today, I have a story by the same author called 'Last Day Blues'.  When you are done listening to the story, write down some of your memories!

Fraction Games

How did you do on yesterday's fraction colouring?  Here are some online games that you can play to practice your fractions!

Fractions!

Imagine that you have a whole pizza and you divide it into 8 pieces..next, you ate 3 pieces.  How much of the whole pizza did you eat?  You ate 3/8!  This is a FRACTION!  Today, we will be learning about fractions and how we write them.  For fractions, there is always a numerator and denominator.  Watch this video to learn more:

Now, you are going to practice colouring in your own fractions!  The following circles are already divided up...you have to colour in the right amounts.  Here are 2 examples:

There are 5 parts in total, so it goes on the bottom (denominator).  3 is coloured it, so it goes on the top (numerator).
This one has the same denominator because it is still divided into 5 parts.  However, only 1 is coloured in, so 1 goes on the top (numerator).

Now try it for yourself:

Probability Fun

To wrap up what we learned about probability, today I have 2 fun activities for you to do.  The first one is for you to colour the balls in each jar so that the sentence is correct.

For this second activity, you first have to colour each part of the this circle a different colour.  Then, you are going to put the colours on the chart.  Now, WITHOUT ACTUALLY SPINNING, you are going to put 20 tallymarks on the chart.  What would the chart look like?

Cookies - Probability

Last week, we did a lot of work on probability.  We talked about the terms LIKELY, UNLIKELY, IMPOSSIBLE, and CERTAIN.  I had an activity where there were bags and you had to tell me what the possibility was for getting each shape.  Here are the answers...did you get them right?

This week, I have a similar activity, but for cookies!  For each question, please also tell me WHY, just like last week.  Write it underneath each question if you have space.  If not, write it on another piece of paper.

Will you be persuaded?

Thanks for all of your persuasive letters last week!  A lot of us tried very hard to convince me of different things!  This week, I have a story about a pigeon who is trying to convince YOU to let him drive the bus.  The book is called “Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” By Mo Willems.  After listening to the story, please tell me whether or not you will let the pigeon drive the bus...why or why not?  Did he give you some good reasons?

Spelling Poem #37: My Senses

This week, I have a poem about our senses!  How many senses do we have?  If you said 5, you are correct.  They are your sense of smell, sight, touch, taste, and hearing.  Which sense do you think you can never live without?  Our bodies are amazing and by using these senses we are able to experience the world around us!  Sometimes, we take these for granted!

Spelling Words:
1) sight
2) taste
3) smell
4) touch
5) sound
6) sense
7) body
8) confuse
9) help
10) suspense

Additional Questions:

1) Fill in the blanks:

_ u s _ _ _ c e

s _ u _ d

_ o d _

_ _ _ f _ s e

2) Write a sentence with the following words:

Help: ________________________________

Body: _______________________________

Sense: ______________________________

3) How many sense do we have?  List them and draw the body part that we use for each one.

4) Describe Spring using your 5 senses....what do you hear in Spring?  What does Spring smell like?  What does Spring look like?  What does Spring feel like?  What does Spring taste like?

5)  Using your five sense, describe something else and see if I can guess what it is!

For example, I have one for you:
I am red.  When you bite into me, I am crunchy and juicy.  When you touch me, I am smooth and round.  I smell sweet.  What am I?

Probability Games

Now that we are more familiar with the terms CERTAIN, IMPOSSIBLE, LIKELY, and UNLIKELY, today I have a fun activity for you.  For this activity, you need a pencil and a paperclip as the spinner (just like how we do it at school).  First, you have to predict which colour will win.  HINT:  Take a look at the spinner very carefully.  Next, you can spin it 10 times...graph it each time.  After, you are going to tell me if your prediction was right.

When you are finished with this activity, here are 2 games that you can play to practice probability.

Probability Machine:  There are different colour balls in the machine...after looking at the balls, put whether each colour is impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, or certain.

Probability Wheel: Spin the wheel to see fishes..then answer the probability question!

More Probability

We learned some probability words last week.  They were CERTAIN, IMPOSSIBLE, LIKELY, and UNLIKELY.

Here are the answers to things that were CERTAIN (will happen) and IMPOSSIBLE (will NOT happen).  Did you get them all right?

Next, here are some examples of things that were LIKELY (will probably happen) and UNLIKELY (will probably NOT happen)

Today, we will be doing another probability activity.

Here is a review of the terms.  Looking at the marbles and the colours:

 - It is CERTAIN to choose a marble because they are ALL marbles (you have to find the one thing that is the SAME in the group).
- It is LIKELY that you will choose a purple because there are more purple marbles...there are 9 purple marbles and 2 yellow ones.
- It is UNLIKELY that you will choose a yellow because there are only 2 yellow marbles.
- It is IMPOSSIBLE to choose green because there are NO green marbles.

Now, you are going to tell me what is the probability of getting each shape.  For each question, please tell me WHY you think it is certain/impossible/likely/unlikely.

Convince ME!

After reading about Alex's persuasive letters and writing your own, you are going to try to convince ME today!  You can persuade me of anything you want.  It can be that you think Summer is the best season of all, that I should give you an ''A'' in Math, or that I should buy a pet dog.  Whatever you choose, make sure to give 3 really good reasons and explain WHY I should believe you.  Your job is to convince me!

Again, here is the planning sheet if you need it.  Afterwards, please write it on a piece of paper.  I can't wait to read your letters and be persuaded!  :)

Learning Goal: We are writing a persuasive letter to ME (Ms. Jong) to try to convince me of something.

Success Criteria:
- I have everything that a letter needs (e.g., date, greeting, body, signature)
- I have 3 good reasons to try to persuade ME of what you think/want.
- I have an introduction and a conclusion
- I have checked my work for capitals, periods, and correct spelling
- My sentences make sense

I Wanna...New Room!

After reading your friends' persuasive letters yesterday, do you understand that good persuasive letters need to explain WHY your reasons will be good for everyone?  Today we will hear another book by the same author of ''I Wanna Iguana", but this time, the book is called "I Wanna New Room".

In this story, Alex wants a new room.  He writes notes to his mom and dad with reasons why he should have his own room.  Like the other story, mom/dad writes back to Alex explaining why he should NOT have his own room.  After you finish listening, fill in the chart of Alex's reasons and Mom/Dad's reasons.  What was the compromise at the end of the story?

Your Persuasive Letters

Last week, we wrote about the mom's reasons for Alex NOT having an iguana.  Here were some of her reasons:

We also wrote a persuasive letter to Ms. Krausz, asking her to extend recess next year.  Some of us gave pretty good reasons.  The following letters were really well written!  They explained WHY their reasons are good for students.  Instead of saying " we can have more time to play", they said that by playing, they may get distracted less in class and help with concentration.  After reading these letters, do you think Ms. Krausz will be convinced? :)

More probability words

Yesterday, we learned the probability words IMPOSSIBLE and CERTAIN.  It is IMPOSSIBLE for turtles to fly and it is CERTAIN for Tuesday to come after Monday.  Today, we will learn 2 more probability words, LIKELY and UNLIKELY.

In an event that is LIKELY, that means that it will probably happen.  There is a very slight chance that it may not, but it will mostly happen.  For example, you are LIKELY to do your homework today.  There is a chance that you may forget...but you will probably do it.

In an event that is UNLIKELY, that means that it will probably NOT happen.  There is a very slight chance that it may happen, but it is not likely.  For example, it will snow in July.  Although it doesn't usually snow in July, there is a little itty bitty chance that it may.

Draw a picture of something that is LIKELY and something that is UNLIKELY and tell me WHY.

Introducing...probability

We will start learning about probability today!  What is probability?  Probability means the chances of something happening.

For example:

It is IMPOSSIBLE for cows to rain from the sky.  Cows will NEVER rain from the sky, there is NO chance for that to happen.  That is why it is IMPOSSIBLE.

It is CERTAIN that the sun will rise and set tomorrow.  When it is morning time, the sun will rise, making it day time.  When the sun sets, it turns into night.  That is 100% going to happen.  The sun won't stay in the sky forever, or else it'll be daytime forever!    That is why it is CERTAIN.

Now, it is your turn to sort these events into the chances of it happening.  Is it CERTAIN for something to happen or is it IMPOSSIBLE?

Persuasive Writing - To Ms. Krausz

I loved reading all of your persuasive letters last week!  Some of us wanted pets and others wanted food.  I gave all of you some feedback on your writing.  When trying to convince someone to do something, you have to think WHY they should give you what you want.  For example, your mom or dad may not give you a puppy if you think it's cute....WHY should they?  If you said that the puppy is cute and will make everyone happier, then they might think, ''OH, I want to be happier...so I'll get you that puppy.".  You have to think HOW it will benefit the person you are trying to persuade.  If ice cream is sweet, is that a good enough reason to give it to you?  If you say that ice cream is made of milk and can be healthy, then that is a better reason when trying to convince someone.

Here is an example of a good persuasive letter.  Your friend asked for books.  She said if she gets more books, then she will know more words!  That is a good reason because everybody should learn more words!  She had pretty good reasons...do you think her mom will get her the books?

Now, you are going to write a letter to Ms. Krausz today.  You are going to try to convince her to give everyone longer recesses next year!  What are some good reasons that you can give her??  Here is the planning sheet to help you.  After you plan, you can write your letter on a lined piece of paper.

Learning Goal: We are writing a letter to convince Ms. Krausz to give us longer recesses next year.

Success Criteria:
- I have everything that a letter needs (e.g., date, greeting, body, signature)
- I have 3 good reasons to try to persuade Ms. Krausz.  WHY should she give you longer recesses?
- I have an introduction and a conclusion
- I have checked my work for capitals, periods, and correct spelling
- My sentences make sense
